Origin of the Shirley Temple Black

The Shirley Temple Black is named after the actress, singer, dancer, and diplomat Shirley Temple who married Charles Black in 1950 and added Black to her name. It also describes the addition of dark rum to the classic Shirley Temple mocktail.

What is Grenadine?

Grenadine is a popular nonalcholic syrup originally made from pomegranates used to flavor drinks and cocktails. With its sweet flavor and bright red hue, it is a popular cocktail ingredient.

Ingredients of a Shirley Temple Black

To make a Shirley Temple Black at home, you will need 2 ounces of dark rum, 4 ounces of lemon lime soda (such as Sprite or 7up), one ounce of grenadine, and maraschino cherries.

Other Alcohol to Add to a Shirley Temple

Another great option for a spirit to add to a Shirley Temple is vodka, which would create a Dirty Shirley cocktail. Instead of rum, add two ounces of vodka to the recipe below.

How to Serve

Serve your Shirley Temple Black in a rocks glass or glass tumbler with lots of ice. Prepare just prior to serving to enjoy cold and to keep the bubbles fresh.
