Ingredients in a Margarita

Just three ingredients are needed for this homemade margarita recipe. For the full list of ingredients and their measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Tequila: Anytime you make a drink with tequila you want to choose one that is made from 100% agave. This ensures that the tequila is pure and doesn’t have any extra fillers or additives. Jose Cuervo Silver is our go-to.
  • Triple sec: An orange-flavored liqueur used in lots of tasty cocktails. For higher-shelf options, Cointreau or Grand Marnier can be used.
  • Sweet and sour mix: Make homemade Sweet and Sour Mix using our easy recipe. Made with fresh ingredients and no extra preservatives, it has the best flavor and is the star of this margarita recipe.

Sweet and Sour Mix

How to Make a Margarita

These margaritas couldn’t be easier to make and are so delicious. Enjoy one after a long day or to celebrate something special. For the full recipe and ingredient measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  1. Prepare your glass. Run a fresh lime wedge around the rim and dip it in kosher salt.
  2. Add the ingredients. Add ice to your glass followed by tequila, Sweet and Sour Mix, and triple sec.
  3. Stir and garnish. Stir gently and garnish with a lime wedge.

How to Rim Your Glass

The salted or sugared rim of a margarita glass is a classic touch and pairs perfectly with the tartness of the cocktail. Using a lime wedge, run it around the rim of the glass and then roll the rim in a shallow plate of kosher salt or sugar.

How to Serve

A margarita can be served on the rocks (over ice) or blended with ice in a blender for a frozen margarita. Serve in a margarita glass or small tumbler and enjoy cold. It’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser!

Make a Pitcher of Margaritas

We love that this margarita recipe can make a single drink or a whole pitcher. Making a pitcher of margaritas couldn’t be easier to do, just increase the amounts of the same three ingredients and stir them together in a pitcher with ice. See the full measurements in the recipe card at the bottom of the page. This makes about six drinks.

This makes an amazing margarita! Like ordering one from a great bar. I’ve been making your sweet & sour mix and having one of these weekly. No more pre made mixes for this house. Thank you!

  4. BECKY says

If making frozen – besides adding ice and blending – will there be any adjustments that need to be made?

    • Nathan Longley says

You should not need any adjustments, I would just use 1 cup ice per drink. Enjoy!
