This Boozy Shamrock Shake comes together so easily and is such a fun drink that doubles as dessert in a glass. Ice cream cocktails are some of my favorites, I had to keep myself from drinking it all before we were done with pictures.

There is a great bar in Milwaukee, Bryant’s, that makes all sorts of different old-timey ice cream drinks. Every time we go I order a couple and they are always so good. But this boozed-up version of the classic McDonald’s Shamrock Shake is so easy to make at home.

Ingredients

Here is an overview of the ingredients you will need for these Boozy Shamrock Shakes. For the full recipe and ingredient measurements, scroll down to the recipe card at the bottom of the page.

  • Vanilla ice cream: You could also use chocolate ice cream, but know the color of the drink won’t be bright green like in the photos.
  • Milk
  • Vanilla vodka: The delicious liqueur provides a boozy kick and flavor that works so well with the mint and the ice cream in this recipe.
  • Creme de menthe: A sweet mint-flavored alcohol. It can be green or clear, and for this drink it does not matter since we are adding food coloring.
  • Mint extract: For another splash of mint flavor!
  • Green food coloring: Optional, but will make your boozy shakes look green like the photos.
  • Whipped cream: Optional for garnish.
  • Cherries: Optional for a colorful garnish.

How to Make a Boozy Shamrock Shake

This delicious Boozy Shamrock Shake recipe comes together in the blender in a few simple steps! Be sure to see the recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full directions.

  1. Blend ingredients. Add all ingredients to your blender and mix until your desired consistency. If it isn’t mixing well, add a splash more of milk.
  2. Garnish and serve! Pour into glasses and garnish with whipped cream and cherries. Enjoy!

How to Serve

Serve your adult milkshakes right away so they are nice and cold. Garnish with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry for an extra-fun addition. Depending on the consistency you go with, you may want to serve your shakes with a straw and a spoon.

Variations

  • If you do not have vanilla vodka, substitute with a half teaspoon of vanilla extract and use regular vodka.
  • If using green creme de menthe, you could use less food coloring or none depending on how green you want your drink.
  • To make this alcohol-free, leave out the vodka and creme de menthe and add more milk.

  1. MT says

Can I use mint chocolate chip ice cream instead of vanilla and leave out the mint extract?

    • Nathan Longley says

I have never tested that but that could work. May be able to add less food coloring also since some already are greenish. The only issue I see is if drinking from a straw and getting the chocolate chips stuck in it or your throat! Good luck and enjoy!
