What is a Flaming Dr. Pepper

It is a flaming cocktail made with just three ingredients. Despite its name, Dr. Pepper is not an ingredient in the cocktail but rather what the flavors mimic when lit on fire. It is served as a dropped shot or bomb.

How to Make a Flaming Dr. Pepper

  1. Fill a glass half full of beer. See below for which beer we recommend.
  2. Pour the Amaretto into the shot glass. Try this homemade Amaretto recipe!
  3. Carefully pour the rum on top of the Amaretto. Pour it over the back of a spoon to allow the rum to float on top of the Amaretto.
  4. Carefully light the rum on fire.
  5. Drop the shot glass carefully into the beer and enjoy! (Do NOT attempt to drink the shot while it is on fire. Do NOT allow the shot to burn for more than about a minute before dropping it – less is better.)

Safety Rules for a Flaming Dr. Pepper

Because we are working with fire, we have a few safety measures you should keep in mind.

  • High Proof Rum is extremely flammable. Keep this in mind, and light one shot at a time with the other shots out of range.
  • Do not attempt to drink the shot while it is on fire. This will end poorly.
  • Don’t let the shots burn out. If they are on fire for more than a minute or two and then dropped in the beer the drastic change in temperature will crack your shot glasses.

What Rum to Use

For a Flaming Dr. Pepper drink, the use of a high-proof rum serves two purposes. To ensure the drink will light on fire, a high-proof alcohol is required. To give the cocktail the best flavor to mimic the soft drink that it is named after, rum is the best choice. Since your typical rum won’t do the trick for this recipe because it won’t produce the pyloric effect, we recommend 151-proof rum for best results.

Beer to Use

Use any light beer for this recipe, something that you like the flavor of.
