Quick and easy to mix up, Chocolate Cake Shots are sure to be a hit for your next party. Despite the name of the shooter, there are no chocolate ingredients in the recipe. With warm notes of hazelnut and a clean boozy vodka kick, a juicy tart lemon is the “icing on the cake”.

What’s in a Chocolate Cake Shot

  • Hazlenut Liqueur. We prefer Frangelico which is one of the most common Hazlenut liqueurs.
  • Vodka. For a shot or vodka-forward drink, it is important to use a good quality vodka. See your recommendations at all price points below. While the recipe calls for clear vodka, you could also use a vanilla or citrus vodka.

Vodka Recommendations

For top tier vodka, we recommend Grey Goose or Belvedere. A good mid-level choice is Grey Goose and the best low level vodka is Tito’s. Find a vodka in your budget that you don’t mind the flavor of.

How to Make a Chocolate Cake Shot

  1. Pour the Frangelico and vodka into a shot glass.
  2. Stir to combine.
  3. Drink the shot then suck on the lemon, enjoy!

Why is it Called a Chocolate Cake Shot

This recipe gets its name from the flavor of the shot, not the ingredients. Flavor chemistry at its finest, the ingredients combine to mimic the indulgence of chocolate cake (in liquid form of course) that we all know and love.

How to Pick Ripe Lemons

Look for a lemon with glossy skin, a bright yellow hue, and no wrinkled or squishy areas or blemishes.

Garnishing

While the shot doesn’t require a garnish itself, sucking on a sugary lemon after taking it is an important part of the flavor experience. Simply sprinkle sugar on a slice or lemon or dip the lemon in a shallow plate that has sugar on it. You could also rim the shot glass with sugar (swipe the slice of lemon around the rim of the glass first so the sugar sticks) and serve the slice of lemon plain.
