Cherry Old Fashioned Ingredients

This Old Fashioned with cherry recipe is easy to make with simple ingredients. Here is more information on what you will need for this cocktail. For the full ingredient list and measurements, scroll down to the recipe card at the bottom post.

  • Bitters: Bitters are a bar essential, and a few drops really do go a long way!
  • Maraschino cherries: A delicious and notorious garnish for many classic cocktails, we are muddling these with the other ingredients to infuse this cocktail with cherry flavor. You can also add a couple on top of your cocktail for garnish.
  • Orange slice: A burst of color and citrus, this adds a fresh flavor to this recipe.
  • Sugar cube: A staple ingredient in the classic Old Fashioned, muddling a sugar cube with the other ingredients balances this cocktail perfectly. These are easily stored in your pantry and can be found in the baking aisle at your grocery store.
  • Cherry liqueur: One of the cherry additions to this recipe, this adds the perfect amount of tartness and cherry flavor.
  • Brandy: Use your favorite brandy. Cognac is a great option here!
  • Lemon lime soda: Like 7Up or Sprite, topping this cocktail adds a little fizz and a refreshing sweetness to the drink.

How to Make a Cherry Old Fashioned

This Cherry Old Fashioned recipe comes together in just a few steps as outlined here. For the full recipe, see the recipe card at the bottom of the page.

  1. Add a sugar cube to your glass. Sprinkle a dash of bitters on top.
  2. Add cherries and an orange slice.
  3. Pour in the cherry liqueur and some lemon lime soda.
  4. Muddle everything together, and then fill the glass with ice cubes.
  5. Add the brandy and stir. Top with lemon lime soda and enjoy!

Brandy vs Bourbon

In this cherry cocktail, we are using brandy instead of the bourbon traditionally used in Old Fashioneds. Brandy is made from distilled wine and tastes somewhat fruity and sweet compared to whiskey. Bourbon, on the other hand, tends to have a stronger flavor profile with vanilla and caramel undertones.

Serve these Old Fashioned cherry cocktails in a tumbler like a rocks glass or Old Fashioned glass. Garnish with an orange slice and cherry for a bright and tasty garnish.
